I know for a fact that I’ve seen these keys start with AD_ in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them start with OrgId_ or ADAL_ before, and that got me pretty curious. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\User MRU\ADAL_ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\User MRU\OrgId_ These keys looked like this: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\User MRU\AD_ Nothing too confusing… except I found something slightly out of the ordinary on the affected users’ machines.Įach of the affected users had 3 subkeys under their User MRU key. You can pretty safely copy these registry entries into a File MRU key and the document will show up in the user’s Recent Document list after the open the corresponding Office program. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\User MRU\AD_BE6E53C02AA553173365761C4DDFDF2439EF0C1C625D5D7365C1043D82B87657\Place MRUĮach of the File MRU and Place MRU keys have items which correspond to the actual Recent Documents, such as: Name: Item 4ĭata: *C:\Users\username\Desktop\Test test test.docx Each one of these subkeys has a File MRU and a Place MRU key inside. The User MRU key can have one or more subkeys in it which represent different Office Identities. The last one, User MRU, is of specific interest to us in this situation. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\User MRU HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Reading Locations HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Place MRU The following are the regkeys associated with Recent Documents in Word 2016: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\File MRU Microsoft Office distinguishes between Recent Documents, Recent Places, and also Reading Locations (not 100% certain what this regkey refers to). I apologize in advance if this info is common knowledge to everyone, but I’m going to explain most of my steps as if I’m presenting new information. I’m fairly familiar with Recent Documents issues, so I knew where to look in the registry in order to start troubleshooting and investigating. Earlier this week, our Help Desk began to receive calls stating that certain users are, all of a sudden, missing their Recent Documents lists within their Microsoft Office applications.
